Bobbi Vickers, The
Owner, brings 20+ years experience in computers, art, and graphic design
background into 2006.
Her
decision to open Web Design
& Beyond came after 5 years of playing at site building. When it
first became apparent that a musician friend was in need of a web site, Bobbi
was asked to take on the project. It was out of love and admiration that she accepted
the challenge to learn the art of building web pages. Through trial, error and
countless hours, the first site slowly sprang to life. " I now have a
firm grasp of what not to do!" Having never been schooled in HTML,
JAVA, FLASH or any such other initials, everything became a learning curve. Of
course having never read the book, she also didn't have the limitations or
preconceptions that some things were not possible. "I would spend hours
looking at scripts and changing one element at a time till I could figure out what
it did and why"
One
thing lead to another and next she was called on to produce graphics. It started
with little things like business cards and letterheads, and soon progressed to
merchandise and an album cover. That's when it dawned on her that short of having
a best friend with too much time and an insatiable love for learning programs on
a computer, that a musician just getting started could spend a small fortune
having the same designs and artwork reproduced on different mediums. "It
just seemed like everyone had their hand out looking to get a slice of the
design money for artwork that already existed" The print shop
charged for layout for business cards, letterheads, posters, and flyers that all
ultimately ended up looking like headers and content on the pages. The ad guys
wanted to be paid for recreating the same types of layouts that were necessary
for the webs. The clubs and venues wanted accessible printable flyers that
they could customize and wanted the artist to pay for that. And all the while,
these things already existed, for the web held all the elements. Granted, the
way graphics are handled and resolutions for print -vs- webs are different, the same principals and layouts applied.
That's when it was decided, that if she could offer
her friend a full array of services, that could tie the identity she was
creating into everything at once, her friend could then afford to create a real
presence both on the web and in real space. It took no time at all for the word
to get out, and the business was there. It
soon became apparent that the hobby was taking up all her free time. In the
summer of 2004, Bobbi opened the doors to Web Design & Beyond. Operating out
of her home, in order to help keep the cost down, she has since built and
serviced over 20 sites and now has 7 full CD layouts to her credit, all in the
brief time since deciding to call it work!
